Early prediction of the outcome of a paracetamol overdose based on an analysis of 163 patients.
Clinical and biochemical data obtained from 163 patients who had taken an overdose of paracetamol were examined to determine which factors or measurements were of value in predicting the severity of ensuing liver damage early after ingestion of tablets. Although the overall severity of hepatic necrosis was found to increase with the dose of paracetamol ingested, correlation was not sufficiently...
متن کاملPlasma glutathione S-transferase measurements after paracetamol overdose: evidence for early hepatocellular damage.
Plasma glutathione S-transferase (GST) measurements have been used to study early changes in hepatocellular integrity after paracetamol overdose and treatment with N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Patients admitted within seven hours and successfully treated had raised or equivocal GST on admission and each showed a transient peak in GST approximately 12 hours after the overdose. Similar, though smaller...
متن کاملFatal variceal haemorrhage after paracetamol overdose.
A patient is described where oesophageal varices developed and bled 13 days after a paracetamol overdose. The bleeding was unresponsive to medical management and proved fatal. There was no evidence that the patient had pre-existing liver disease. At necropsy the liver showed severe acute parenchymal necrosis but chronic lesions were absent. The portal vein and hepatic veins were patent.
متن کاملMeasuring plasma paracetamol concentrations in all patients with drug overdose or altered consciousness: does it change outcome?
OBJECTIVE To assess whether measuring plasma paracetamol concentrations in all patients with drug overdose or collapse (altered consciousness) changes outcome. METHOD A retrospective survey was performed of all patients attending the Accident and Emergency Department at Guy's Hospital, London over a 12 month period who had plasma paracetamol concentrations measured (it is hospital policy that...
متن کاملSevere barbiturate and paracetamol overdose: the simultaneous removal of both poisons by haemoperfusion.
Charcoal haemoperfusion was successful in the treatment of severe butobarbitone poisoning complicated by resistant hypotension. At the same time the rapid removal of paracetamol may have lessened the severity of the subsequent hepatic injury. The mechanism and management of shock associated with barbiturate poisoning, and the possible application of haemoperfusion in paracetamol poisoning are d...
